How to pair dessert wine

The golden rule: the wine should be at least as sweet as the dessert, or it can taste thin. Match peach and apricot desserts with Sweet Viognier, custards and creme brulee with Cuvee Mathilde, and spiced or ginger desserts with Gewurztraminer. Sweet whites are also a classic with blue cheese and aged hard cheeses.

How to serve dessert wine

Serve dessert wine well chilled, around 8 to 10°C, in small pours using a small white wine glass. Once opened, re-cork and keep it in the fridge: most sweet wines stay fresh for several days. Read our full guide to French dessert wines.

Dessert wine FAQ

What is the difference between dessert wine and sweet wine?
The terms overlap. Dessert wine is sweet enough to serve with or as dessert; sweet wine covers everything from off-dry to fully sweet.

What cheese goes with sweet wine?
Blue cheese is the classic match, and aged hard cheeses work well too.

Do I need a special glass?
No. A small white wine glass is perfect.
